Local Philanthropic Service
LOCAL LITERACY PROJECT:
REACH OUT & READ KC
RO&RKC gives young children a foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care and encouraging families to read aloud together. The club supports RO&R with volunteers for events and donating books that are given out at area pediatric clinics and local impact grants from the Pi Beta Phi Foundation to provide 500 new books. PI PHI VOLUNTEERS also spend time reading to children in clinic waiting rooms and serve on the RO&RKC board of directors.
The R.E.A.D. program’s mission is to improve children’s reading skills by employing a powerful method: reading to an animal. This long-time club program at Brighton Gardens senior living center in Prairie Village brings together school children and senior citizens who read to specially-trained dogs. Led by MT Alpha/KS Alpha SALLY STUART, Pi Phi volunteers help with the program and snacks.
GKCAC SCHOLARSHIP &
SPECIAL NEEDS FUND
Established in 1987, the Scholarship and Special Needs Fund (SSNF) assists both Pi Phi collegians, as well as alumnae in pursuing educational goals or in meeting financial demands created by personal misfortune.
For more than 60 years, the annual Pi Beta Phi Theatre Tour, sponsored by the Greater Kansas City Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Club, has been a favorite trip for theater lovers and their friends from all over the country.
Open to the public, the tour typically involves four nights at a fabulous New York hotel and orchestra seats to four new Broadway shows. Reservations are booked in June for the annual October trip. Email today to be placed on the mailing list!
The tour has served as the club’s major fundraising project to benefit both local and Pi Beta Phi philanthropies.
